I’m about to buy my tickets, what do I need to consider?

Airport
Rome has 2 airports. Ciampino is the smaller. Mazzano Romano is best accessed from Fiumicino airport, formally known as Aeroporto Leonardo da Vinci. That is the airport you want to use as your hub. Neither airport is ‘in’ Rome, they are outside of Rome.
Getting to Mazzano
Mazzano is best accessed by hiring a car at Fiumicino. Even if you are arriving by train, or spending time in Rome, you are likely to find that driving to Mazzano from the airport is easier than from Rome, as you do not go into Rome on the way.
It is potentially possible to get to Mazzano by a combination of train, bus and walking, however you will need to have sought detailed advice and made very thorough plans. Mazzano is a base for exploration by car. The guide for visitors provides information about getting to Mazzano and shopping on the way. Google maps or GPS will get you to the town, however you will need a co-pilot in the car reading you instructions from the moment you turn into the tow

Note that you are looking for Mazzano Romano, Lazio, as there are also other Mazzano's, and a nearby Nazzano.

Car hire
Many web sites provide competitive car hire options. There are both retail websites (searching lots of car hire suppliers) and direct websites, such sat www.sixt.com.au. Make sure you buy 100% insurance with no excess. Cars in Italy are vulnerable to scratches and damage. Take a dashboard mount for your mobile phone, which you can use with Googlemaps. At the point of the car hire, you will likely get the hard sell for various upgrades, all of which should be declined. The car hire desks are on one level of carpark, and pick-up is on another level. On occasions, it can take over an hour to pick up the car. No paperwork is not required, all car hire in Italy is 100% electronic only.

Hire the smallest car possible that will fit your baggage.

Make sure you have an International Driver licence, purchased online from the NRMA. It is a little grey booklet. This is not required for car hire, but may be required if pulled over by police.

Cars need to be returned with a full tank. Information is provided in the visitor guide about options as to how to achieve this.
